Julius Caesar
Julius Caesar poster for SDSU
OVERVIEW
Julius Caesar is a Shakespeare tragedy that is a household name. This project entailed creating a poster for the re-imagination of the play with an all-female cast. The poster needed to entice the primary target audience of women, ages 25 to 40, to re-experience this classic story in a new way.
SOLUTION
Julius Caesar has many similarities to the game of chess in that every move is carefully planned out and the key to winning is always being one step ahead of your opponent. To metaphorically show the feminist version of Caesar, I chose to replace the all-powerful king with a queen chess piece. The poster image references the famous scene where Brutus, represented by the bishop piece, stabs Julius Caesar in the senate. For dramatic effect the Queen piece was knocked over wallowing in a pool of blood. The sans serif typeface Giacomo, was chosen as a nod to the era. The dark background was chosen to emphasize the dark, tumultuous nature of the scene.
